Quick Answer

Many spiritual practitioners describe experiences during ascension phases including heightened sensitivity, vivid dreams, emotional waves, and changes in interest patterns. These are reported experiences, not medical symptoms. Many have ordinary medical or psychological explanations and warrant professional evaluation.

Many spiritual practitioners describe their experiences during what they call ascension as a layered, sometimes confusing mix of energetic, emotional, mental, and bodily sensations. Some of these experiences are gentle. Some are intense. None are universal, different practitioners describe very different journeys. The list below is descriptive of what spiritual traditions report, not prescriptive of what you should expect or feel.

Why this caution matters: in the last decade, internet ascension content has often listed serious medical symptoms (heart palpitations, dizziness, vision changes, persistent fatigue) under the banner of 'ascension symptoms.' This framing can delay people from getting medical care for conditions that have ordinary, treatable causes. The earth-based and contemplative traditions I draw from would never claim that a physical symptom should be ignored in favor of a spiritual interpretation. Your body deserves the medical attention it asks for. Always.

Energy

Energetic and Subtle Experiences

Many spiritual practitioners describe an increase in what they call subtle sensitivity. Sounds may seem louder; rooms may feel emotionally charged; other people's moods may seem to register in the body more immediately than usual. Some describe a felt sense of energy moving, warmth, or a general heightening of sensitivity. In earth-based traditions, these experiences are interpreted as a person reorganizing around expanded awareness.

From a psychological lens, many of the same experiences correspond to documented phenomena: heightened interoceptive awareness, sensory processing changes during meditation practice, or the ordinary restlessness that comes with intense periods of inner work. Both frames can be true. Neither replaces professional evaluation if the sensations are persistent, painful, or interfere with daily life.

Emotions

Emotional Experiences

Many practitioners describe waves of emotion that seem disproportionate to the daily circumstances, sudden grief, unexpected joy, deep compassion that can feel almost painful in its intensity, or a quiet weight of sadness without an obvious source. Some report that old emotions surface that they thought were long resolved.

In earth-based traditions, these emotional waves are interpreted as material rising for integration, feelings that were once held below conscious awareness coming up to be felt and released. Carolyn Myss in Sacred Contracts describes this as the soul reorganizing around its purpose. From a clinical lens, similar phenomena are documented in trauma recovery, intensive meditation practice, and significant life transitions. Many of these emotional patterns also overlap with depression, anxiety, and grief disorders. The cycle suggests that working with a therapist familiar with both spiritual and clinical lenses is often the right support during these phases.

The mind

Mental Experiences

Many practitioners describe an increase in pattern recognition and what feel like meaningful coincidences, synchronicities, in Jung's language. They may notice numbers (111, 222, 333) appearing with unusual frequency. They may find that long-held beliefs about work, relationships, or identity feel suddenly unstable. Conversation that used to feel sufficient may feel hollow; deeper conversation may feel necessary in a way it didn't before.

Carl Jung's writings on synchronicity offer a framework for this layer that doesn't require either dismissal or magical thinking. The brain is a pattern-recognition organ; periods of intense inner reorganization tune that pattern-recognition more finely. Whether one interprets the resulting patterns as messages from beyond ordinary consciousness or as the brain's own meaning-making is a question each tradition answers differently. Both can be useful frames.

The body

Practitioner-Reported Physical Experiences

Many practitioners report changes in sleep, vivid dreams, waking at unusual hours (3:00-4:00 AM is commonly named), or sensitivity to noise and light. Some report changes in appetite, often a turning away from heavily processed food or alcohol toward simpler, plainer foods. Some report a sense of energy moving in the body, sometimes pleasant, sometimes uncomfortable.

I want to repeat the caution here because it matters most in this section. Every physical experience listed above can have an ordinary medical explanation. Sleep disruption can mean stress, thyroid dysfunction, sleep apnea, anxiety, depression, hormonal changes, or simply over-caffeination. Appetite changes can mean any of several medical or mental health conditions. Sensations of energy in the body can mean many things, including conditions that benefit from medical care. Please see a doctor first. Spiritual interpretations belong on top of, not in place of, medical evaluation.

Crystal Companion

Smoky Quartz

In earth-based traditions, Smoky Quartz is the gentle grounding companion when bodily experiences feel overwhelming. It is a tradition, not a treatment. Hold this stone, feel its weight, and use it as a reminder to keep one foot on the floor.

What to Do If You're in This Phase

First: rule out medical causes. See a doctor for any physical symptom. Get bloodwork. Talk about sleep. Discuss anything that feels off.

Second: tend to emotional health. If you're struggling, work with a therapist, ideally one comfortable with both clinical and contemplative frames. Many spiritual practitioners describe this support as essential during intense phases. There is no spiritual achievement in suffering alone.

Third: ground daily. Time outdoors, simple food, sleep protected, contact with people who know you in daily life and not only in spiritual life. See our grounding during ascension page for a step-by-step practice.

Fourth: trust the felt timeline of your own body. The cycle suggests that integration cannot be rushed. Many spiritual practitioners describe the most important part of an ascension phase as the integration that happens long after the intense experiences have subsided.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these symptoms real?

The experiences are real, many spiritual practitioners describe them consistently across traditions. The medical interpretation matters: many of the same experiences correspond to documented medical or psychological conditions. Please consult professionals for any persistent or concerning experience.

Should I just push through?

No. Especially not if you're suffering. The earth-based traditions I draw from would never advise pushing through suffering. They would advise grounding, support, professional care, and time. Healing, spiritual or otherwise, happens with rest and care, not endurance.

What if my doctor doesn't believe in this stuff?

Your doctor's job is to rule out medical conditions, not validate your spiritual frame. Both can be true: your experiences are spiritually meaningful to you AND you also need to rule out medical causes. A good therapist can help bridge the two frames. ISSSEEM and the Spiritual Emergence Network maintain directories of mental health professionals who work with both lenses.

How long does this phase last?

Different practitioners describe very different timelines, weeks, months, years. There is no universal answer. Many spiritual practitioners describe intense phases as cycling rather than linear, with quieter integration periods between waves of activity.

What crystals help?

In earth-based traditions, Black Tourmaline and Smoky Quartz for grounding, Selenite for clearing, Amethyst for integration. They are companions, not treatments. See our crystals for ascension page for the full list.

Is this a mental health crisis?

Sometimes the line is real and visible, if you are struggling significantly with daily functioning, having thoughts of self-harm, or experiencing dissociation, this is a mental health concern and requires professional support. Spiritual emergence and mental health crisis can look similar from the outside; only a qualified professional can help you sort them out.
