What is the Soul Urge Number?
Your Soul Urge Number, also called the Heart's Desire Number, is calculated from the vowels in your full birth name. In numerology it describes your inner motivation, what you privately long for beneath any ambition or image you project.
What your Soul Urge Number means
The Soul Urge Number, also called the Heart's Desire, is read from the vowels of your full birth name. In the Pythagorean tradition the vowels are the open, sounded letters, and they are taken to carry the voice of the inner self. Notice the pattern: while the Expression describes what you can do, the Soul Urge describes what you actually want when no one is watching.
Glynis McCants describes the Soul Urge as your soul's true wish, the quiet pull beneath every decision. It is most audible in solitude, when ambition quiets and you can hear what genuinely satisfies you, separate from what looks impressive or earns approval.
Many people feel a tension between their Soul Urge and their Expression or Life Path. That is normal. The work of a lifetime is often learning to let the heart's desire guide the talents, rather than spending the gifts on goals the heart never wanted.

How to calculate your Soul Urge Number
- 1
Step 1
Write out your full birth name as it appears on your birth certificate.

Assign each vowel its Pythagorean value (A = 1, E = 5, I = 9, O = 6, U = 3) and add them together.

Reduce the total to a single digit, keeping Master Numbers 11, 22, and 33 unreduced.

What is the difference between the Soul Urge and the Heart's Desire?
There is no difference. Soul Urge and Heart's Desire are two names for the same number, calculated from the vowels of your full birth name. Both describe inner motivation rather than outward talent.
Why is the Soul Urge calculated from the vowels?
In the Pythagorean tradition the vowels are the sounded, open letters, taken to carry the voice of the inner self. The consonants, which shape the Personality Number, are read as the outer, more visible expression.
Is Y a vowel in numerology?
Sometimes. Most numerologists count Y as a vowel when it produces a vowel sound and no other vowel is present in the syllable, as in the name Lynn, and as a consonant otherwise. Schools differ, so note which rule you used.
What if my Soul Urge and Expression numbers clash?
A tension between the two is common and not a problem to fix. Numerologists read it as the lifelong work of letting the heart's desire guide your talents, rather than spending your gifts on goals the heart never truly wanted.
