Visual Tells: What Real Amethyst Looks Like
These are the visual signatures many people learn to recognize after handling a few authentic specimens. In my practice, the combination of these tells, not any single one alone, is what makes the difference between an educated guess and a confident read.
- Natural amethyst shows color zoning, alternating bands or zones of darker and lighter purple within the same crystal.
- Natural specimens have inclusions: small gas bubbles, liquid pockets, or 'tiger stripe' patterns visible under loupe.
- Pleochroism, slight color shift between violet and blue-violet as the crystal is rotated under light.
- Synthetic amethyst often shows too-uniform color with no zoning whatsoever.
- Synthetic specimens may show distinctive 'seed plate' flaws, a flat plane where growth originated.
- Glass imitations are perfectly clear with no internal structure and may show visible bubbles.

Hands-On Tests You Can Do
These tests can be done at home with simple tools. None of them is gemological certification, for definitive identification, consult a qualified gemologist. But for consumer-level confidence, the combination of two or three tests is usually sufficient.
1. Color zoning inspection
Easy- What you need:
- Good light and a 10x loupe
- How to do it:
- Examine the crystal under magnification and good light. Look for variation in color across the body of the crystal.
- What to look for:
- Natural amethyst almost always shows some color zoning, slightly different shades of purple in different parts of the same crystal. Synthetic amethyst tends toward too-uniform color throughout. Note: very small tumbled stones may not show enough volume for zoning to be visible.
- Reliability:
- Use with another test, natural can occasionally appear uniform, especially in small specimens.
2. Inclusion inspection
Moderate- What you need:
- A 10x or 20x jeweler's loupe
- How to do it:
- Examine the crystal under high magnification, looking for tiny inclusions: gas bubbles, liquid pockets, 'fingerprint' patterns, or 'tiger stripe' lines.
- What to look for:
- Natural amethyst typically has at least some inclusions, these are mineralogical fingerprints from formation conditions. - What to look for:
- Real amethyst (natural or synthetic) generally has no air bubbles, bubbles are characteristic of glass imitations. Visible bubbles under 10x are nearly diagnostic for glass.
- Reliability:
- Reliable on its own for catching glass.
5. UV light response
Moderate- What you need:
- A 365nm longwave UV flashlight
- How to do it:
- In a dark room, shine UV onto the stone and observe.
- What to look for:
- Natural amethyst typically shows little to no fluorescence under longwave UV, occasionally faint pinkish or grayish response. Some synthetic amethyst shows different fluorescence patterns. Glass usually shows strong yellow-green or no response. This is supplementary.

6. Provenance and treatment disclosure

- How to do it:
- Ask the seller: 'Is this natural amethyst, synthetic/lab-grown amethyst, or heat-treated?'
- What to look for:
- Reputable sellers disclose synthetic origin and any treatments. Vague answers ('it's all natural quartz') or refusal to disclose are red flags.

- Color check: heat-treated stones show orange-amber, not purple. The fake-citrine issue is more common than fake-amethyst issue.
