How to spot real opal

Real opal is hydrated silica with characteristic play-of-color from internal silica sphere structure. Doublets layer thin opal on dark backing; triplets add a clear cap. Synthetic Gilson opal is real silica chemistry but lab-grown. 'Slocum stone' is plastic. The edge inspection (looking for seams) and play-of-color movement are the practical authentication tests.

Opal is one of the most assemblage-prone gemstones, meaning a single piece sold as 'opal' might be solid opal, a doublet (thin opal on dark backing), a triplet (clear protective cap over opal over backing), synthetic, or pure plastic. Each of these is a different product with a different price point, and disclosure varies wildly across the market. In my practice, the first authentication step is always edge inspection: solid opal shows uniform color and structure through the entire stone, while doublets and triplets show visible seams where the layers meet. The second step is play-of-color analysis, the way internal silica spheres diffract light is genuinely difficult to fake.

Why Opal Gets Faked

Solid precious opal, particularly fine Australian black opal, Lightning Ridge opal, and high-grade Ethiopian opal, commands extraordinary pricing. Investment-grade black opal can run $1,000-$15,000+ per carat for top specimens. The economic incentive to substitute or assemble is enormous, and the opal industry has developed sophisticated treatments and assemblages to extend supply.

The assemblage problem is particularly acute. Doublets use a thin slice of genuine opal cemented to a dark backing (black potch, obsidian, or basalt) to produce the dramatic look of expensive black opal at a fraction of the cost. Triplets add a clear quartz or glass cap for protection. Both contain real opal material, they're not technically 'fake', but they should be disclosed and priced significantly below solid opal. Synthetic Gilson opal (developed in the 1970s) is chemically real opal but lab-grown, and plastic imitations like 'Slocum stone' use polymer to mimic play-of-color visually.

At-home tests

Hands-On Tests You Can Do

These tests can be done at home with simple tools. None of them is gemological certification, for definitive identification, consult a qualified gemologist. But for consumer-level confidence, the combination of two or three tests is usually sufficient.

1. Edge inspection (the primary doublet/triplet test)

What you need:
A 10x jeweler's loupe and good light
How to do it:
Examine the side or edge of the opal under magnification. Look for visible layer seams.
What to look for:
Solid opal shows uniform structure through the entire thickness. A doublet shows a clear horizontal line where the opal layer meets the backing. A triplet shows two horizontal lines: the cap-opal seam and the opal-backing seam. If you see any seam, the stone is an assemblage.
Reliability:
Reliable on its own for catching assemblages.

2. Play-of-color analysis

Bright indirect light
How to do it:
Hold the opal in bright light and rotate it through different angles. Observe how the colors move and change.
What to look for:
Real precious opal shows play-of-color that shifts in patches as the viewing angle changes, different parts of the stone show different flashes of color. Plastic 'Slocum stone' shows iridescence that's uniform across the surface and doesn't move dramatically with rotation. Synthetic Gilson opal shows play-of-color but often in suspiciously uniform 'snakeskin' or columnar patterns.

3. Water absorption test (for Ethiopian opal)

A bowl of water and a piece of suspect Ethiopian opal
How to do it:
Submerge a piece of suspected Ethiopian opal in water for 1-2 hours. Observe color change.
What to look for:
Real Ethiopian opal is hydrophane, meaning it absorbs water and temporarily becomes more translucent and may show changed play-of-color. Australian opal does NOT absorb water. Synthetic opal generally does not absorb water. Plastic imitations may discolor or warp. WARNING: this test is only safe for Ethiopian opal in moderation, repeated water exposure can damage some specimens.

Reliable on its own as a test for Ethiopian opal authenticity (but specific to Ethiopian origin).

4. Magnification of color pattern

How to do it:
Examine the play-of-color pattern under high magnification.
What to look for:
Natural opal shows irregular pinpoint or harlequin patterns of color from random silica sphere stacking. Synthetic Gilson opal shows characteristic 'columnar' or 'snakeskin' patterns from controlled lab growth, these patterns are diagnostic for synthetic origin to a trained eye.

5. UV light response

A 365nm longwave UV flashlight
How to do it:
In a dark room, shine UV on the opal and observe fluorescence.
What to look for:
Australian white opal often shows faint blue-white fluorescence. Black opal generally fluoresces weakly. Synthetic Gilson opal often shows strong yellow-green fluorescence. Plastic typically fluoresces brightly. This is supplementary information.

6. Provenance and assembly disclosure

How to find a qualified gemologist

This guide recommends professional gemological verification for higher-value pieces. Below is the practical path most consumers use, including realistic price ranges.

For higher-value pieces ($200+)

Use a recognized gemological laboratory. The major ones in the United States are GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AGS (American Gem Society), and AIGS in Bangkok for Asian-market stones. Each operates by mail-in submission.

Typical cost: $50-$200 for standard certification depending on stone, complexity, and turnaround. GIA lab reports are the global gold standard.

For moderate-value pieces ($30-$200)

Visit a local gem & mineral show or established lapidary. Many reputable dealers will run a refractive-index check or specific-gravity test on-site as a courtesy, particularly if you are considering buying from them. Established rock shops with multi-decade reputations are also reliable.

Typical cost: free to $20 for an informal in-person identification. Mineral show season (spring and fall in most US regions) is the best time.

A note on jewelry-store appraisals: these are not the same as gemological certification. Most retail jewelry appraisals are valuation for insurance, not identification. If a piece's identity is in question, ask specifically for an identification report from a graduate gemologist (G.G.) credentialed by GIA or equivalent, not a retail appraisal.
