What are the Chinese zodiac years?

The Chinese zodiac years chart maps each year from 1924 to 2043 to its animal, element, and stem-branch pillar in the 60-year cycle. Each zodiac year begins at Li Chun (立春 lì chūn), between February 3 and 5. In the Chinese calendrical tradition, January and early February births belong to the previous animal year.

Key Takeaways

  • 120 years, 1924 to 2043: two full turns of the 60-year sexagenary cycle (六十甲子 liù shí jiǎ zǐ), each year with its exact start and end dates.
  • A zodiac year begins at Li Chun (立春 lì chūn), which falls on February 3, 4, or 5 depending on the year, never on January 1 and not at Lunar New Year.
  • January and early February births belong to the previous animal year: a January 1994 birthday is the 1993 Water Rooster, not the 1994 Wood Dog.
  • The element beside each animal comes from the year's Heavenly Stem and changes every two years; it is separate from the animal's fixed element.
  • 2026 is the Fire Horse year (丙午 Bǐng Wǔ), February 4, 2026 to February 3, 2027.

One hundred twenty rows, two complete turns of the sexagenary wheel: the chart of Chinese zodiac years below runs from the Wood Rat year that opened on February 5, 1924 to the Water Pig year that closes on February 3, 2044. Every row carries the exact dates the zodiac year begins and ends, because the boundary is the part most charts get wrong. Take 1988 as a worked example: the row reads Earth Dragon (戊辰 Wù Chén), February 4, 1988 to February 3, 1989. A birthday on January 20, 1988 sits before that range, so it belongs to the 1987 Fire Rabbit (丁卯 Dīng Mǎo), a different animal, element, and pillar from what the printed calendar year implies.

The boundary

When does the Chinese zodiac year start?

A Chinese zodiac year begins at Li Chun (立春 lì chūn, "spring begins"), the moment the sun reaches ecliptic longitude 315 degrees. That instant lands on February 3, 4, or 5 depending on the year: in 1924 it fell on February 5, in 2025 on February 3, in 2026 on February 4. The zodiac year does not begin on January 1. It also does not begin at Lunar New Year, which follows the new moon and wanders between late January and mid February. The classical sources describe Li Chun as the first of the twenty-four solar terms (節氣 jié qì), the frame the imperial almanac was organized around: the 協紀辨方書 (Xié Jì Biàn Fāng Shū, "Treatise on Harmonizing Times and Distinguishing Directions"), compiled in 1739 for the Qianlong Emperor, builds its date-selection system on exactly this solar-term frame.

The year-pillar rule the chart follows is the Zi Ping (子平) convention of BaZi (八字 bā zì, the Four Pillars), the method modern lineage teachers such as Joey Yap and Master Raymond Lo work in: the year pillar, and with it the zodiac animal, changes at the Li Chun instant, which is published to the minute in China Standard Time. A birth before that minute belongs to the previous year's pillar. That is why every row in the chart carries a date range instead of assuming January 1, and why the boundary dates differ from year to year. If a birthday falls on a boundary date itself, the hour matters: the free BaZi calculator resolves the pillar from the full birth date and time.

The mechanism

How does the 60-year cycle work?

Each year carries a two-character pillar (干支 gān zhī): one of ten Heavenly Stems (天干 tiān gān) paired with one of twelve Earthly Branches (地支 dì zhī). Stems and branches advance together, one step per year, and the pairing repeats after exactly 60 years, the sexagenary cycle (六十甲子 liù shí jiǎ zǐ). The Chinese zodiac years in this chart span two full turns of that wheel: the first opened with 甲子 (Jiǎ Zǐ, the Wood Rat) on February 5, 1924, and the second opened with the same pillar on February 4, 1984. Turning 60 still carries the name 花甲 (huā jiǎ) in Chinese because that is the birthday when a person's own pillar returns.

The element column tracks the year's stem, and it moves in two-year steps: 1984 and 1985 are Wood years, 1986 and 1987 Fire years, then Earth, Metal, and Water before Wood returns. In Wu Xing terms each element arrives once in Yang form and once in Yin form, which is why 1994 is the Yang Wood Dog (甲戌 Jiǎ Xū) while 1995 is the Yin Wood Pig (乙亥 Yǐ Hài). The rolling stem element is not the animal's fixed element: the Dog is fixed Earth in every Dog year, whatever stem the year carries, and a full reading weighs both layers. The year pillar is also only one of four; a written BaZi Premium reading works from the month, day, and hour pillars as well, which no year chart alone can do.

The stones

Find your year, then meet your animal's stones

Your row names your animal, and the animal opens the stones. Each of the twelve animals keeps a primary stone and two supporting stones in Crystal Cassandra's pairing notes, matched to the animal's fixed element and polarity. This is a pattern, not a verdict: the pairings are traditional starting points, and each animal's page explains the reasoning stone by stone.

The 2026 animal

The Horse ( ) and Sunstone

The Fire Horse year (丙午 Bǐng Wǔ) runs February 4, 2026 to February 3, 2027, and its animal pairs first with Sunstone: "Sunstone embodies Horse's Yang Fire at noon, bright, optimistic, motion-supporting." The full Horse profile covers all three of its stones, and the Year of the Fire Horse 2026 guide reads the year itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Chinese zodiac year is 1994?

People born from February 4, 1994 to February 3, 1995 belong to the year of the Wood Dog (甲戌 Jiǎ Xū) in the Chinese zodiac. A birth from January 1 to February 3, 1994 falls in the previous zodiac year, the Water Rooster (癸酉 Guǐ Yǒu) of 1993, because the zodiac year changes at Li Chun (立春 lì chūn), not on January 1.

What Chinese zodiac year is 1985?

People born from February 4, 1985 to February 3, 1986 belong to the year of the Wood Ox (乙丑 Yǐ Chǒu) in the Chinese zodiac. January and early February 1985 births fall under the 1984 Wood Rat (甲子 Jiǎ Zǐ), the pillar that opened the current 60-year cycle on February 4, 1984.

What Chinese zodiac year is 1991?

People born from February 4, 1991 to February 3, 1992 belong to the year of the Metal Goat (辛未 Xīn Wèi) in the Chinese zodiac. A January 1991 birthday reads as the 1990 Metal Horse (庚午 Gēng Wǔ) instead, so check the exact range whenever a birthday lands before February 4.

When does the Chinese zodiac year start?

The Chinese zodiac year starts at Li Chun (立春 lì chūn), the solar term marking the start of spring, when the sun reaches ecliptic longitude 315 degrees. Li Chun falls on February 3, 4, or 5 depending on the year, so the zodiac year never starts on January 1, and in the Zi Ping (子平) BaZi convention it does not start at Lunar New Year either.

What Chinese zodiac year is 2026?
In the Chinese zodiac, 2026 is the year of the Fire Horse (丙午 Bǐng Wǔ), running from February 4, 2026 to February 3, 2027. It is a Yang Fire year in the 60-year cycle, and births from January 1 to February 3, 2026 belong to the 2025 Wood Snake (乙巳 Yǐ Sì). The full Year of the Fire Horse 2026 guide reads the year month by month.
What Chinese zodiac year is 1995?

People born from February 4, 1995 to February 3, 1996 belong to the year of the Wood Pig (乙亥 Yǐ Hài) in the Chinese zodiac. Anyone born between January 1 and February 3, 1995 carries the 1994 Wood Dog pillar instead, one of the boundary cases the exact dates exist to catch.

Why do some charts say a different animal for my year?

Chinese zodiac charts disagree because they use different year boundaries: many Western charts switch animals on January 1, popular calendars switch at Lunar New Year, and classical BaZi switches at Li Chun (立春 lì chūn), about February 4. All three agree by late February, so the births that get different animals from different charts fall mostly in January and the first half of February, which is why a chart with exact date ranges settles the question.

About this tool

This tool draws on Chinese calendrical tradition and classical BaZi (八字). These are spiritual and reflective traditions, not medical or psychological treatments. Many people find these practices supportive for self-reflection and emotional well-being, but they should not be used as a substitute for professional care.

Year boundaries follow the Li Chun (立春) solar-term convention of the Zi Ping (子平) method, with dates given in China Standard Time; boundary-date births should be checked against the exact Li Chun instant. Sources include the 協紀辨方書 (Xié Jì Biàn Fāng Shū, 1739) and the modern Zi Ping lineages of Joey Yap and Master Raymond Lo. The chart is a pattern-recognition framework for self-reflection, not a prediction system and not a substitute for professional advice.

For entertainment and self-reflection. Not a substitute for professional medical, legal, financial, or psychological advice.

Results are personal and vary from one person to the next. What many people find supportive may not work the same way for you, and nothing here is a promise of any specific result.

If you are experiencing significant emotional or physical distress, please consult a qualified professional.
