How often should you cleanse crystals?

In traditional crystal healing, cleanse crystals you actively use in meditation or healing after every session, stones you carry or wear weekly, and your general collection every full moon. Always cleanse a newly acquired crystal first. Many people find their own intuition, noticing when a stone feels heavy or dull, the most reliable guide.

“How often should I cleanse my crystals?” is the question the whole practice keeps circling back to, and the honest answer is that it depends on how you use them. A crystal sitting on a shelf absorbs energy differently than one you carry through a challenging workday. Rather than a rigid schedule, I encourage you to develop a relationship with your stones, you'll learn to sense when they need attention.

How often to cleanse

Crystal Cleansing Schedule

After every use

Crystals used in active healing, meditation, or energy work

Examples: Crystals placed on the body, used in healing sessions, held during emotional processing

Best method: Quick sage smoke, selenite plate, or running water (if safe)

Weekly

Crystals you carry daily or wear as jewelry

Examples: Pocket stones, crystal bracelets, pendants, worry stones

Best method: Selenite plate overnight, moonlight, or sage

Every full moon (monthly)

Your general collection and display crystals

Examples: Crystals on shelves, altars, windowsills, or desk displays

Best method: Full moon overnight cleansing (entire collection at once)

When newly purchased

Any crystal you've just acquired

Examples: From a shop, online order, gift, or found stone

Best method: Thorough cleansing with your preferred method, these stones have absorbed energy from many handlers

After difficult events

Crystals present during emotionally intense experiences

Examples: Arguments, grief, illness, stressful situations, breakups

Best method: Salt water (if safe), earth burial, or extended selenite + moonlight combo

When they feel 'off'

Trust your intuition, you know your crystals

Examples: The crystal feels heavy, dull, sticky, or less vibrant than usual

Best method: Whatever method calls to you. Your intuition about your stones is valid.

Reading your stones

Signs Your Crystal Needs Cleansing

Beyond any schedule, your own perception is the most reliable guide. Many crystal practitioners develop an intuitive sense for when their stones need attention. Here are common signs to watch for:

  • The crystal feels heavier than usual when you pick it up
  • Its color appears duller or less vibrant than you remember
  • You feel resistance or reluctance when reaching for it
  • The stone feels 'sticky' or 'thick' energetically
  • Your meditation or healing work with it feels less effective
  • You've been through a difficult period while carrying or wearing it
  • Someone else has handled the crystal

My Personal Practice

“I use a selenite plate as my daily default, every crystal I carry goes on it each night. Once a month, around the full moon, I do a full collection cleanse outdoors. And whenever I use a crystal in a healing session, I cleanse it immediately after with sage smoke. This three-tier approach covers everything without feeling burdensome.”

The simplest routine

The Minimum Practice

If you want the simplest possible crystal care routine, here it is: get a selenite plate, place your crystals on it when you're not using them, and do a full moon cleanse once a month. That covers 90% of what your crystals need with almost no effort.

Start with a Selenite Plate

The single most useful crystal care tool. Place your stones on it nightly for passive, effortless cleansing.
