Kunzite

Kunzite is the stone that made a gemologist immortal. In December 1902, a parcel of pink crystals from the White Queen claim near Pala, California reached George Frederick Kunz, the celebrated chief gemologist at Tiffany and Co., sent by a local miner who guessed they were tourmaline. Kunz recognized a new gem variety of spodumene, and in 1903 the chemist Charles Baskerville named it kunzite in his honor. The Pala pegmatites went on to supply the world until Afghanistan and Brazil joined them, and the gem has demanded respect from cutters ever since: two directions of perfect cleavage and strong pleochroism mean each stone must be oriented so its deepest pink looks up through the table, and a careless blow can split it cleanly. It is also famously light-shy, fading toward pale with years of sun, which earned it the trade name evening stone. Tilt a crystal slowly under lamplight and watch the color arrive and leave; this gem only fully performs at the angle it chooses.
