Metaphysical (in Crystal Healing): Definition and Meaning

The word metaphysical literally means 'beyond physics.' In crystal healing, the metaphysical properties of a stone are the traditional energetic and emotional associations passed down through tradition, Rose Quartz for love, Black Tourmaline for protection, Amethyst for intuition, and so on. These are symbolic descriptions, not scientific claims.

In my practice, I always distinguish between a crystal's physical properties (composition, hardness, color, formation) and its metaphysical properties (the traditional energetic associations). Melody's Love Is in the Earth, Judy Hall's Crystal Bible, and Robert Simmons' Book of Stones are the three most commonly cited modern reference works in the metaphysical canon.

Metaphysical crystal lore has roots in many ancient traditions: Egyptian temple gemology, Ayurvedic gem prescription, Greek lithotherapy (lithos = stone), medieval European lapidary texts. The modern Western metaphysical canon was largely synthesized in the late 20th century, with Melody's Love Is in the Earth (1991) and Judy Hall's Crystal Bible (2003) as the most influential reference works.

Metaphysical descriptions guide stone selection in crystal healing. If you want a stone for emotional healing, the metaphysical tradition points to Rose Quartz, Rhodonite, or Mangano Calcite.
