What is zodiac cusp?
A cusp is the boundary line between two adjacent zodiac signs or houses in a natal chart. In traditional Western astrology, planets near a cusp carry qualities of both adjacent signs or houses, though they technically belong only to the one they fall into.
The word 'cusp' simply means edge, the precise degree where one sign ends and the next begins. Each zodiac sign is exactly 30 degrees wide, and the cusps fall at 0° Aries, 0° Taurus, 0° Gemini, and so on. House cusps are similar but depend on birth time and location, which is why their exact degrees vary from chart to chart.
In traditional Western astrology, a planet is never 'on the cusp' in a literal dual-sign sense, it's in one sign or the other. The chart suggests, however, that planets within about three degrees of a cusp often express qualities of the adjacent sign. According to Demetra George, this is especially true for the Sun and Moon, where the symbolic seasoning of the neighboring sign can color the placement.
Cusps appear in every chart tradition that uses the 30-degree zodiac, dating back to the Hellenistic Greek astrologers who first divided the ecliptic into twelve equal segments. The popular notion of being 'born on the cusp' as a dual-sign identity is a 20th-century pop-astrology development; traditional Western astrology has never used cusp as a hybrid sign category.
To check whether you have planets near a cusp, look at your birth chart and note any planet within three degrees of 0° or 30° of its sign. The Sun and Moon are the most commonly cusp-influenced placements because they move quickly.
House cusps are different from sign cusps. Each of the twelve houses begins at a cusp degree set by your birth time, and the sign on that cusp colors how you experience the house's life domain. The most important house cusps are the Ascendant (1st house cusp) and Midheaven (10th house cusp).
