What is opposition?
An opposition is an aspect of 180 degrees between two planets, placing them across the chart from each other. In traditional Western astrology, the opposition reveals polarity, the two energies pull against each other and ask to be consciously balanced.
The opposition is one of the five major aspects. The chart suggests it as the awareness aspect: you cannot see one side without the other. A Sun-Moon opposition, for instance, makes a person constantly negotiate the gap between conscious will (Sun) and emotional need (Moon), which is why people with this aspect often become unusually self-aware.
In traditional Western astrology, oppositions are not 'bad' aspects. According to Liz Greene, they describe the parts of the self we tend to project onto other people. We meet our oppositions through partners, colleagues, and rivals, the people who carry the energy we struggle to hold ourselves. Integration is the symbolic task.
The opposition is one of the original Ptolemaic aspects, defined in the 2nd-century Tetrabiblos. Hellenistic Greek astrologers considered it a 'difficult' aspect because of its associations with conflict, but the modern psychological school led by Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas reframed it as the aspect that brings unconscious material into awareness through relationship.
To find oppositions in your chart, look for any two planets exactly six signs apart (Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, Gemini-Sagittarius, etc.) and within about 8 degrees of orb. The Full Moon, astrologically, is always a Sun-Moon opposition.
Astrologers read an opposition by asking which planet you tend to identify with and which planet you tend to project onto others. The chart suggests integration when you can hold both polarities yourself rather than acting one and externalizing the other. In my practice with clients, this is often the slow work of midlife.
