What is astrological progression?
Astrological progression is a forecasting technique that symbolically advances a natal chart by one day for each year of life. In traditional Western astrology, the progressed chart shows the slow internal evolution of personality across long timescales.
The most common form is secondary progression: each day after birth equals one year of life. Your day-30 chart, in this method, shows your age-30 inner landscape. The chart suggests progression as the symbolic 'maturation' of the natal chart, slower than transits, deeper than month-to-month moods, tracking the long arc of how you develop across decades.
In traditional Western astrology, progressed placements move at a glacial pace. The progressed Sun shifts about one degree per year, changing signs roughly every 30 years. The progressed Moon moves about one degree per month, completing a full zodiac cycle every 27-28 years. According to Robert Hand, watching the progressed Moon's sign and house movement is one of the most useful long-term forecasting practices in modern astrology.
Secondary progression appears in Ptolemy's 2nd-century Tetrabiblos as a forecasting technique, though it was systematized into modern usage in the 19th and 20th centuries. Robert Hand and other modern astrologers refined it into the form most contemporary practitioners use. Tertiary and solar arc progressions are alternative variants, but secondary progression remains the dominant method.

Astrologers read progressions by focusing on the progressed Sun (long-arc identity development), progressed Moon (emotional themes by month), and progressed Mercury, Venus, and Mars (mental, relational, and motivational maturation).
