What does Mercury in the houses mean?
Mercury by house shows where your attention naturally goes and how you think out loud. In traditional Western astrology Mercury circles the chart in about 88 days and turns retrograde three to four times a year, more often than any other planet.
Mercury at a glance
- Mercury retrogrades 3 to 4 times a year for about three weeks, so a natal Mercury retrograde is common rather than unusual.
- It rules both Gemini and Virgo, the only planet in classical astrology to rule an air sign and an earth sign.
- It never travels far from the Sun, so Mercury sits in the Sun's house or one adjacent to it in most charts.
- The house shows the subject your mind keeps returning to.
Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun, which produces a quirk no other placement has: in most charts Mercury sits in the same house as the Sun, or the one on either side. That constraint makes the Mercury house less a free variable than a modifier, and reading it alongside the solar placement is more informative than reading it alone.
It is also the most frequently retrograde planet, three or four times a year for roughly three weeks each, which means a natal Mercury retrograde appears in a large minority of charts. In the tradition that is not a defect. It describes a mind that revisits, checks and circles back rather than one that moves in a straight line.

Where This Fits in the Chart
A house placement is one line of a chart, not the chart. The free birth chart calculator will tell you which house your Mercury actually occupies, and the birth chart guide explains how houses and signs are read together. Both need an accurate birth time, since the houses depend on it entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Mercury in a house mean?
Mercury's house shows where your thinking, curiosity and communication concentrate. In traditional Western astrology it marks the department of life you naturally analyse, discuss and gather information about.
How common is a natal Mercury retrograde?
More common than most people expect. Mercury retrogrades three to four times a year for about three weeks each, so roughly one chart in five carries a retrograde Mercury.
Why is Mercury usually in the same house as the Sun?
Mercury never appears more than 28 degrees from the Sun as seen from Earth, so it is confined to the Sun's house or one immediately adjacent in the great majority of charts.
Which signs does Mercury rule?
Gemini and Virgo. It is the only classical planet ruling both an air sign and an earth sign, which is why its symbolism covers both quick exchange and careful analysis.
